Yesterday was beautiful. The sun was shining bright, and the rain had finally moved on. With such nice weather, we decided it was the perfect day to take the chicks outside for their very first supervised field trip to the backyard.
To keep them safe, we snapped together our old baby playpen and turned it into a temporary chicken run. We placed leftover building materials across the top to prevent the chicks from escaping and to protect them from anything that might want to get in.
Overall, the chicks did very well outside. We gave them food and water and let them enjoy the fresh air and the soft, cool grass beneath their tiny feet. Watching them explore their new surroundings was so much fun.
We also let our older chickens out of their run so they could graze around the yard. Well, that didn’t exactly go as planned… Instead of grazing, they decided to escape the heat by hiding in my small wildflower garden. I have to admit—it was pretty cute.
All in all, it was a great day for all of my chickens, both big and small. If the weather stays nice, I may take the baby chicks out for another adventure today. And knowing my older hens, they’ll probably head right back to their favorite hiding spot in the wildflower garden.
